Every autumn, something extraordinary happens in the cold Arctic waters of Northern Norway. Thousands of herring migrate into northern coastal waters, attracting some of the ocean's most impressive predators: humpback whales and orcas.
From October through January, Northern Norway becomes one of Europe's most remarkable destinations for whale watching, offering visitors the opportunity to witness these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.
The Great Herring Migration
The main reason whales and orcas gather in Northern Norway is simple: food.
As autumn arrives and ocean conditions change, large schools of Norwegian spring-spawning herring move towards their wintering areas along the northern Norwegian coast.
These enormous concentrations of fish create a seasonal feeding opportunity for marine predators.
Orcas and humpback whales follow the herring, sometimes gathering in impressive numbers wherever the fish are concentrated.
The exact locations vary from year to year, depending on the movements of the herring. In recent years, the waters around Tromsø, Skjervøy and the fjords of Northern Norway have become particularly well known for these spectacular encounters.
Orcas – The Intelligent Hunters of the Arctic
Orcas, also known as killer whales, are among the ocean's most intelligent and sophisticated predators.
Unlike solitary hunters, orcas often work together in family groups, using remarkable communication and coordinated hunting techniques.
In Northern Norway, they are especially famous for a technique known as carousel feeding.
During these hunts, the orcas cooperate to herd herring into tightly packed schools near the surface. They then use powerful movements of their tails to stun the fish before feeding.
Witnessing this behaviour in the wild is an unforgettable demonstration of the intelligence and cooperation of these extraordinary animals.
Humpback Whales – The Gentle Giants
Humpback whales are another spectacular visitor to Northern Norway during the winter months.
These enormous marine mammals can reach lengths of approximately 15–17 metres and weigh more than 30 tonnes.
Like orcas, humpback whales are attracted by the abundance of herring.
They often feed by lunging towards dense schools of fish, opening their enormous mouths to take in large quantities of water and prey before filtering the water through their baleen plates.
Visitors may also witness humpback whales surfacing, diving and displaying their impressive tail flukes against the dramatic Arctic landscape.
Why October to January?
The autumn and early winter months generally coincide with the seasonal arrival of herring in northern coastal waters.
As the herring gather, whales follow the available food supply, creating opportunities for wildlife encounters.
However, nature does not follow a fixed calendar. Whale movements, feeding locations and the duration of the season can vary considerably between years.
This unpredictability is part of what makes Arctic wildlife encounters so special. Every day on the water is different, and every encounter is entirely natural.
An Arctic Experience Unlike Any Other
Whale watching in Northern Norway is about much more than the whales themselves.
Imagine travelling through spectacular Arctic fjords, surrounded by snow-covered mountains, deep blue waters and the unique light of the polar winter.
During the darkest months, the Arctic landscape takes on an almost magical atmosphere, with beautiful twilight colours and, under suitable conditions, the possibility of witnessing the Northern Lights.
The combination of breathtaking scenery, Arctic wildlife and untouched nature makes Northern Norway an extraordinary winter destination.
