Why Do Whales Visit Alta in Winter?
Every year, from October to January, the fjords of Northern Norway become a feeding ground for some of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures.
During the winter months, enormous schools of Atlantic herring migrate into the fjords in search of suitable wintering grounds. Following these schools are orcas (killer whales) and humpback whales, attracted by the abundance of food.
Orcas work together in coordinated groups to herd herring into tight balls, while humpback whales use their powerful feeding techniques to consume large quantities of fish.
This spectacular natural phenomenon makes the Alta region an exciting destination for whale watching, offering the chance to witness these incredible marine mammals in their natural Arctic habitat.
